DC’s Been Busy: Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and more

We already knew 2016 was going to be a huge year for the DC comic universe. Trailers for Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad aired at Comic-Con last summer and since then we’ve been waiting for DC’s next move, allowing Marvel to step up their game in preparation for some actual competition this year

But as of last night and this morning DC is all anyone is talking about, specifically that Suicide Squad trailer, and rightly so. Cut perfectly to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody the lyrics, “we shall not let you go” couldn’t be more apt.

The Worst. Heroes. Ever. have never looked so great. Margot Robbie looks fantastic as the unhinged Harley Quinn, The Joker has his own maniacal say in matters and Deadshot gets a great introduction. Likewise, Enchantress, Croc, El Diablo and Boomerang shine in their own way. Locked up for who knows how long the soon to be Suicide Squad are freed from captivity as Freddie Mercury builds to the Bohemian crescendo. There’s an awful lot to dissect but I’ll leave that to the comic book pros, for me, this is the greatest superhero trailer we’ve had since Spider-Man. Boom!

Now we move onto the more intriguing news, the first look at Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Set for a 2017 release this teasing sneak peek serves as a double whammy. Setting up her origin story for the stand-alone film but also giving her appearance in Batman vs. Superman a little extra weight. I have to say, while the colour palette is a little grey it does look impressive, hopefully the film lives up to early expectations.

Lastly, DC and Warner Bros took the opportunity during the ‘DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League’ special on The CW to introduce Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg in cool comic book concept art, with added commentary from their respective actor; Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher.

While the first look at Wonder Woman and the other Justice League characters is exciting, the Suicide Squad trailer is all anyone will be talking about for a while. That, and singing Bohemian Rhapsody over and over as they walk down the street with a giddy schoolboy skip in their step. At least that’s what I did this morning.

    1. Will Smith will be great, hopefully! I think he has enough versatility to bring something different to the role, especially as the role demands something different from him. Tom Hardy is an interesting one, I only ever caught the back end of his ‘dropping out’ story but I’m not too fussed he’s not in it. I feel the lesser names will flourish more. But disregarding all of that, the film as a whole is going to be great!

  1. Evil never looked so delicious. Nice writeup. Wonder Woman should be dope too, but the period piece flashback stuff has me kinda worried. It depends on tone there… which Suicide Squad nails, in the trailer at least. And somehow they made Jai Courtney seem cool ;) I’m ready to get my nerd on… time to skip n sing… later buddy.
