STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is Hoth the Chain (Spoiler Free, of course)

So Episode VII is pretty darn good!

I have debated for a while now whether to review The Force Awakens in my usual manner or go for something a little lazier. Well, no, lazier sounds a little apathetic, let’s try, focused.

Unless you happen to live in the Jakku system where tales of the Jedi and the resistance are mere myth then no doubt you’re aware that Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Episode VII and the first of a new trilogy, is all that anyone has been talking about for pretty much the last year.

More recently however that discourse gradually shifted toward the haunting spectre of potential spoilers, what The Phantom Menace is to A New Hope, what Gollum is to Smeagol, what the dark side is to the light. Without mixing metaphors and movie references too much you get my point. Spoilers are bad, films are good. A little simplistic but there you have it and anyone who doesn’t agree should…(insert spoiler hatred here).

Twitter was awash with potential giveaways and a few sites did a fairly good job at ruffling a few feathers (MTV, Den of Geek, Empire) I could go on forever baby. Because, when it comes down to it, any discussion whatsoever will plant the seed in an impressionable mind and so the spiral into anxious expectation begins.

With the biggest movie event of the decade anticipation was, as expected, at fever pitch. Excitement was Palpatineable despite the fears of a minority that The Force Awakens might ruin the franchise and bring it to an Endor. Super fans were looking in Alderan places trying to escape any mention of the words, Star, Wars, Force, Awakens, Skywalker, Solo, BB-8, Poe, Finn, Rey, even ‘The’ was filtered.

But now that it’s over, I’m checking my list and I’ve seen it twice, I’ve finally sat down and there are only really a few words that need to be said.

In Spoiler Free terms:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is simply stunning. The entire picture from start to finish is Hoth the Chain.

* * * * *

p.s. if my two sentence review hasn’t convinced any doubters then surely this will. There is one shot in The Force Awakens that has officially knocked Jackie Brown from top spot. Anyone who knows me will be aware that this is a pretty big deal, kinda like Finn!

~ May the Force be with you ~

  1. Nice review, James. You had me laughing from the clever headline to the Endor. It is hard to talk about this flick without ruining it. So I’ll just say I totally agree. I gave it 5 stars too. I’m interested in which camera shot that is now. Check my nerdy Theory article with spoilers and leave me a comment with the answer… Please… it rivals Jackie Brown, so I gotta know ;)

      1. Oh it was fine, really. It’s the only star wars I’ve ever seen. I’m actually surprised by how much I didn’t hate it. But also surprised by how much Sean didn’t love it.

        1. Hmmm, well I guess to the educated Star Wars viewer it had everything a Star Wars fan wanted which was a fantastic relief. To the new viewer I should imagine it might have seemed a little cheesy? Comedy based and not enough info on the Jedi?

        1. I know the feeling, I recently watched IV, V, and VI again to prepare and I was a little bored after that despite their awesomeness! However, TFA is such a new experience that it outdone a lot of the stuff in the original trilogy that just made it even better
