Suicide Squad Trailer

Following the leak of the San Diego Comic Con trailer for Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. went and dropped it like a ton of bricks and it looks fantastic.

I’m currently in the process of writing an article discussing the rivalry between Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC. The general gist, I love DC, Marvel not so much. My main reasoning behind this controversial opinion is the fact that Marvel try to tread the line between comic and seriousness and it all gets a little lost somewhere in the middle. DC has a clean cut dark side that fits the DC Superhero sub-genre nicely into a Thriller Christmas wooly. There are no stupid Iron Man jokes or ego trips from Thor over the size of his hammer. Beautifully shot dark films that don’t tiptoe around serious questions, that aren’t afraid to expose harsh realities in a modern age.

Stay tuned for that one but for now here is the official Comic Con trailer for Suicide Squad and boy is it a doozy.

First things first it’s clear that this film will fit into DC’s grand scheme. Superman is mentioned and we catch a glimpse of Batman.

With an eerie backing track that sets a dark sinister tone the trailer starts with some basic exposition. The Suicide Squad consists of convicted supervillains who eventually become antiheroes when they act under government direction undertaking dangerous covert black ops missions in exchange for a pardon.

"Justice has a bad side."

If you can forgive the basic black and white distinction wittingly observed by an in-the-know government official, the Suicide Squad are bad guys. But it becomes clear that there is a desperation in their act. Their pardon comes at a high cost, fighting for a system they inherently despise goes against every bad bone in their body but if they’re free then I guess that’s something right? Wrong, if it all goes Pete Tong they will be held fully accountable and as such this trailer makes for interesting viewing.

Why is Batman chasing Harley Quinn? Have the Suicide Squad relapsed into their supervillain territory? Until the plot is released it will remain ambiguous but what we do get from the trailer is a very good look at the overall feel of the film.

Dark, sinister, eerie and action packed is everything DC does well and this film looks no different. Margot Robbie looks like her authentic loon as Harley Quinn and Will Smith as Deadshot has taken on an interesting role considering his previous filmography. But with a vast amount of attention directed toward Robbie in a leading role DC are keen to make the first real strides into bringing female characters into their cinematic universe. Wonder Woman appears in the Batman v Superman trailer and Supergirl is set for her own TV spin-off.

Whether we’ll see any progress in the establishment of other DC Superheroes such as Aquaman remains to be seen but I’m sure excited to see how this one turns out.

Ending with a violent and manic Joker torturing some poor soul Suicide Squad is off to a good start with a visually striking trailer and tantalising exposition. Let’s hope the film delivers come 2016, it’s a long wait but with Batman v Superman released in the same year it promises to be a great year for DC. Better than Marvel? We’ll have to wait and see.

You won’t be catching these lyrics in any Marvel trailer that’s for sure:

“I started a joke which started the whole world crying. But I didn’t see that the joke was on me. I started to cry, I started the whole world laughing. If I’d only seen that the joke was on me.”

Happy (read: sinister) Viewing

  1. Great article. I loved reviewing it too.

I think Harley Quinn steals the show here. Even with Joker in there, sounding all Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

And you somehow managed to squeeze in a Pete Tong reference. Nice! Bonus nerd points.

    1. I’m on the road today so won’t have a chance to flick through all the reviews that probably popped up last night so put a link to your review in here and I’ll have a quick butcher’s. I thought the Joker sounded good, definitely manic but not what people are used to by any means so it could go one of two ways. But you’re right, Harley Quinn definitely steals the show
